About RMC

About the Conference

Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman

Sir Chandrasekhara Venkata Raman was an Indian physicist. He employed monochromatic light from a mercury arc lamp which penetrated transparent material and was allowed to fall on a spectrograph to record its spectrum. He detected lines in the spectrum which he later called Raman lines. He presented his theory at a meeting of scientists in Bangalore on 16 March 1928, and won the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. In his memory, research students in Physics department of Savitribai Phule Pune University organise Raman Memorial Conference every year.

RMC The Raman Memorial Conference, started in the year 1994, is organized annually by the research students of the Department of Physics, Savitribai Phule Pune University. The two day conference is enriched by scientific talks and discussions. There are four oral sessions including invited talks. The invited talks are delivered by eminent scientists from various fields to promote the interaction between the scientists and the students. The open discussion after each oral presentation and at poster session is a key to self assessment and self understanding. Ever since the event started, it has continuously grown in all aspects. The conference aims to encourage young researchers working in physical sciences and related areas to present their work, interact among themselves and with eminent scientists in relevant fields.

Celebrating the gravity of Gravitational Waves

Detection of Gravitational Waves : New window to our universe On September 14th of the centennial year of the Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, scientists were able to hear echoes of the spacetime for the first time; they detected gravitational waves emitted by merger of binary black holes. Einstein had predicted existence of gravitational waves a century ago. The prediction was just verified a year ago after a mammoth effort put forth by more than 1000 scientists and engineers over a period of more than 3 decades. And it is just a beginning! A new window just has been opened to look at our mysterious and fascinating universe. Again, Einstein is inviting upcoming generation of researchers to explore unknowns of the universe though the new window. Indian scientists are already contributing significantly. We, Indians, are very fortunate that we will be building one such window, proving a wide spectrum of opportunities, LIGO-India, in our backyard.

Bhiday Prize

R. Chandrashekhar Memorial Foundation's (RCMF)

Late Dr. M. R. Bhiday Prize

For papers (oral and poster) with ‘Potential for Industrialization’

The prizes are meant for the papers (oral or poster) presented at RMC-2016 and which have got potential for industrialization (or attempts are already made in that direction). The selection will depend upon the decision of a committee (consisting of the representatives of RCMF, the Department of Physics, the Department of Electronics Science and the Department of Instrumentation along with one or two distinguished industry-personnel) based on the abstracts and an interview by the committee (to be arranged at the time of RMC).

All the participants who feel that their paper could be considered for the prizes are requested to send their ‘Detailed Synopsis’ to rmc AT physics DOT unipune DOT ac DOT in at the earliest for the preview of the committee.

The synopsis should indicate additionally the following:

  • What industrial applications are expected?
  • What attempts are made in that direction-contact with industries etc.
  • Most importantly, what study is made for indicating the reliability, repeatability, reproducibility etc of the results.
  • Indication of previous work reported by the group on the topic.

  • Participants should  include the following information :
